Weekly Superintendent Update, Sept. 10

Dr Sirko

Today, many schools will host Patriot Day assemblies and lessons as we approach the 20th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001. It’s hard to believe that it has been two decades since the deadliest terrorist attack took place on American soil. I was an assistant superintendent in Colorado Springs at the time and will never forget what it was like to see the news unfold on a television screen.  I remember visiting schools and that there was no way to easily explain to our students what had happened and comfort their fears.  It is important to take a moment to remember the people who lost their lives that fateful day, and make sure our children learn about this important day in our nation’s history.

Strategic Plan Listening Sessions

The Strategic Plan Steering Committee had its first meeting last night. The committee will use input from a series of Listening Sessions this month to find trends and set goals for the district’s future, including goals for what a D51 graduate should be able to do and know. Please consider attending one of the listening sessions below. They are all remote and will take place from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.

Free and Reduced-Price Applications

A quick reminder that applying for free or reduced-price school meals also gives you access to free or reduced-price student and sports fees, testing fees, and other benefits. Even though all school meals are free this year, you should still apply for free or reduced-price meals here if you qualify in order to take advantage of other fee reductions.

Data Dashboard

The D51 Data Dashboard will introduce a new feature next week. In addition to COVID-19 counts, the dashboard will display illness counts. The graph will include a total count of active cases of COVID-19-positive students in one column and the total count of students absent because they were ill due to other reasons. There will also be a column showing the percentage of students who are out sick at a school due to COVID-19 plus any other illnesses.

The dashboard continues to be updated each school day using absentee data from the previous school day. Students and staff are counted separately in the graphs. Only absences due to the student or staff member testing positive for COVID-19 are counted in this data, and cases come off the list when a student or staff member’s isolation period is over. Students and staff are not counted in the list for absences due to other illnesses, quarantines, or if they are choosing to stay home while their class or school wears masks for 14 days due to someone else testing positive.

Employment Opportunities

Just a reminder to check our website for employment opportunities as we still have many jobs to fill across the school district for a variety of different positions such as custodians, bus drivers, special education paraprofessionals, nutrition services, and many others. We do provide health benefits and a great working environment.
