The 2020-2021 school year is over, but plenty of work continues here in District 51! These updates will continue most weeks over the summer. A quick reminder, the D51 Data Dashboard will not be updated over the summer. Please continue to check the Mesa County Public Health site for the latest information about COVID-19 numbers in our community.

Summer Extension

I’m happy to report that more than 2,500 students are already registered for Summer Extension! Thanks to federal dollars specifically for COVID-related expenses, we are able to offer our largest summer learning opportunity in recent history to help students catch up in reading, writing, and math and recover high school credits. This is an incredible opportunity for students who may have experienced learning loss during remote learning at the end of the 2019-20 school year or struggled in 2020-21.

Summer learning will take place June 2-29 at 34 sites. As many students are not vaccinated against COVID-19, mask protocols will remain in place at these sites during Summer Extension to protect all students and staff.

Planning for 2021-22

While COVID-related protocols have not yet been decided for 2021-22, I want you to know that I am meeting with Mesa County Public Health and others to work on making the healthiest choices possible for the coming school year. As we have seen many times over the last 15 months, health and public safety regulations can change quickly. My goal is to bring plans for the next school year to you by mid- to late-July to ensure that our protocols match up with best practices at the time.

Annual Book Fair

This year’s Book Fair will be from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 15-16 in the Grand Mesa Middle School gym. I know many of you look forward to this event each summer, and we are delighted to offer it again this year. The book fair has books that are no longer needed for curriculum or that teachers no longer need from their own collections. All books are free, so be sure to bring boxes and bags to take home as many as you’d like!

Hope you enjoy the three-day weekend and your well-deserved time off!

Warm regards,

Dr. Diana Sirko
