Grand Junction, CO – A year-and-a-half after construction crews broke ground on the new Orchard Mesa Middle School, the public is invited to tour the finished product at a Community Open House from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2020, at 2736 C Road.

The current, 60,000-square-foot OMMS is fast approaching its 60th birthday, has multiple maintenance issues and multiple buildings, which poses a security threat. The design for the new, two-story, 100,000-square-foot building drew is designed with safety and 21st century education needs, and drew inspiration from middle school projects in Fort Morgan, Greeley, and Montrose.

Features of the new Orchard Mesa Middle School include:

• A security vestibule at the only public entrance to the building to improve student safety

• A flexible commons area that can accommodate cafeteria seating or double as an auditorium with a stage and wide stairs that can be used as seating

• A two-story media center

• A gym and an auxiliary gym/wrestling room

• Classrooms for STEM exploration and an outdoor classroom

Nine years after a 2008 Bond Measure that included funding for a new OMMS failed, voters approved bond funding for the construction of a new OMMS in the 2017 General Election. The $40 million construction project is funded by a combination of funding from the 2017 Bond Measure and a $13.9 million matching Building Excellent Schools Today grant from the state.

The 2017 Bond Measure can only be used for capital costs. In addition to the new OMMS building, the 2017 Bond Measure included funding for maintenance projects at 38 schools, new gyms Palisade High School and Dual Immersion Academy, security vestibules and keyless lock systems at multiple schools, and thousands of Chromebook computers. All bond spending can be tracked at bit.ly/d51bond.

Demolition of the old school (with the exception of the pool/gym building) is scheduled to begin this spring. Sports fields and a track will be built over the site of the old building.
