Clifton, CO - Mt. Garfield Middle School will close at 1 p.m. today, Nov. 18, 2019, due to students leaving school due to illness. Students who normally take the bus will be picked up by buses at the school, and parents/guardians should pick up children who are normally picked up from school.

The closure will allow cleaning crews to disinfect the campus and buses and minimize the spread of any illness. The school will remain closed for the rest of the day today and all day Tuesday, Nov. 19.

We hope to re-open the school on Wednesday, November 20, 2019. However, if your child is not feeling well or has been in contact with someone who is experiencing these symptoms, please stay home and do not return to school until at least 24 hours after they stop experiencing symptoms in order to stop the spread of illness.

At this time, we cannot confirm the source or cause of the illness. However, due to the fast spread and primary symptom, which is vomiting, Mesa County Public Health believes many absences at both Palisade High School last week and now Mt. Garfield Middle School have likely been caused by norovirus.

Student and staff health and safety are top priorities. Closing the school for cleaning, and to allow students and staff to rest and not continue to spread the illness, is in the best interest of the entire school staff and student population.
