Grand Junction, CO – The first-ever Expanding Your Horizons! Western Colorado Girls in STEM Conference for third- through eighth-grade girls will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 14, 2018, at West Middle School, 123 W. Orchard Ave.

West Middle School science teacher Heidi Ragsdale coordinated the Girls STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Conference through a grant she won last summer and a partnership from the Colorado Education Initiative’s STEM Design Challenge.

“Western Slope girls will get the opportunity to solve a local problem using STEM design thinking, coding, and making, while networking with professional women in STEM. This type of partnership is important in STEM fields, considering mentorship helps recruit, maintain, and retain women in STEM fields. Currently women make up just 18 percent of computer science bachelor degrees earned, and only 7 percent of mechanical engineers are women,” Mrs. Ragsdale said, citing 2016 statistics from the National Science Foundation.

The conference is open to all Western Slope girls, whether they attend a D51 school or not. Teams of five girls, plus a mentor, can register by emailing Mrs. Ragsdale at Heidi.Ragsdale@d51schools.org. Permission slips for the conference are due at West Friday, April 6, 2018.
