D51 honored as Environmental Leader

Representatives from Mt. Garfield and Redlands middle schools and District 51 traveled to Denver Oct. 4-5, where the school district was recognized by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment as a Gold Leader in the state’s Environmental Leadership Program.

The delegation was honored today at the Governors Banquet for their efforts with a metal recycling project. Congrats to D51 Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator Petie Pope, the Mt. Garfield Middle School M.E.S.A. program’s Dave Hamilton and Alanna Piccillo, Redlands Middle School Art Teacher Thea Skinner and the following students:

  • Aslinn Murray- Mt. Garfield
  • Kayleigh Smith – Mt. Garfield
  • Lillian Price – Redlands
  • Keeley Clark – Redlands
  • Avaree White – Redlands

Mt. Garfield Middle School and Redlands Middle School partnered on a metal recycling drive in April to raise money for science, technology, engineering, and math programming. West Star Aviation and Western Metals Recycling sponsored the drive.
