Ems to temporarily close

East Middle School to temporarily close due to positive COVID-19 cases
Posted on 10/23/2020

Grand Junction, CO - Today, District 51 was made aware of several positive cases of COVID-19 at East Middle School that will result in over 200 students and several staff members who need to quarantine as a precaution. Because of the large number of individuals needing to quarantine, D51 administration has decided to take extra precautionary measures and temporarily close the school and transition to learning remotely through November 3.

The school will provide Chromebooks to students so learning can continue remotely until the quarantine concludes on November 3 and in-person learning resumes on November 4. The school will provide information to families regarding checking out a Chromebook, accessing meals, and other concerns.

District 51 and Mesa County Public Health began contract tracing on Monday due to a positive result reported on Sunday. Additional positive cases were identified during contact tracing, as well as the need to quarantine almost half of the student body due to their close contact with the positive cases.

Students who need to quarantine as a result of being in close contact with a positive case have been notified to follow quarantine guidelines during the closure. Only students who receive the quarantine notice will need to isolate and follow quarantine guidelines. The remainder of the student body have received a low-risk/exposure letter and should monitor for any symptoms, but do not need to follow quarantine guidelines while in remote learning.

School District 51 is continuing to work closely with Mesa County Public Health to respond to COVID-19 in schools. During this temporary closure, the school will be deep cleaned and disinfected by D51 custodial staff.
