District 51 schools to start August 17
Posted on 08/14/2020

Grand Junction, CO – In-person learning for District 51 schools will begin on Monday, August 17. The original start date of August 10 was pushed back a week to allow staff more time to prepare to welcome students back, with additional COVID-19 related procedures. The D51 Online Program, formed to provide students a 100% online option, will begin on August 24.

At a Special Board of Education Meeting on August 14, board members and staff discussed their preparedness for starting the school year on Monday. Discussion included an update about safety equipment, which has been distributed to all schools over the last few days; job vacancies, many of which have been filled by new and existing staff; and the status of specific plans and procedures for each campus. After receiving the update, the Board of Education felt that District 51 is ready to welcome students for in-person learning on Monday.

All schools are open, and nearly 90% of D51 students will attend in-person. Schools will have additional protocols, such as directed hallway traffic, frequent handwashing and cleaning of surfaces, and face covering requirements. Parents are asked to submit a daily symptom report using the form found in ParentVue. Students in grades 6-12 can submit their own report and find the form in StudentVue and Classlink. Students who arrive at school and don’t have a submitted report will be screened by a health assistant as soon as possible.

All students in grades 6-12 and all staff are required to wear a face covering throughout the day. All students are required to wear a face covering when riding the bus, entering and exiting the school, etc., but students in grades PreK-5 can remove their face covering when they are in their classrooms/cohorts.

In response to COVID-19, all D51 schools are hiring an additional health assistant to support COVID-19 related tasks, such as symptom screenings, cleanings, and quarantining students who become ill while at school.

The D51 Online Program will begin on Monday, August 24 for students who have registered using the form at www.d51schools.org/resources/covid19. The online program is open to all students and will be taught by teachers who cannot return to in-person teaching. Students who participate in the online program will still be associated with their home school, but concurrently enrolled in the D51 Online Program, which will be taught separately from in-classroom lessons. Families do have the option of switching from in-person to online, or vice versa, if needed.
