Grand Junction, CO - The Outdoor Wilderness Lab (OWL) is back for day camps this spring! OWL is an outdoor science school owned and operated by School District 51 and located next to the Gateway School in Gateway, CO. OWL day camps are provided to D51 sixth-grade students from multiple middle schools this spring.
OWL’s unique learning environment in the heart of canyon country gives students who may never have spent quality time in the great outdoors before a chance to have a camp-like experience while learning real lessons in hands-on ways.
OWL teaches Colorado Academic Standards-based science lessons appropriate for 6th-graders, respect for and knowledge of nature, curiosity and a passion for discovery, problem-solving, resiliency, and teamwork.
OWL began as a small program for Bookcliff Middle School sixth-graders in 2013. Over the years, students have used different camps on the Grand Mesa for their OWL experience. However, these camps could only accommodate so many students at once and for one week at a time.
In order to expand OWL to all D51 sixth-graders who want to participate, OWL organizers secured funding in 2019 and opened a permanent facility next to Gateway School in 2020. The permanent facility was scheduled to host half-week, overnight experiences at the camp throughout spring 2020. Unfortunately, the first year with OWL was cut short after a couple weeks of OWL camps due to COVID-19. This year, OWL is back with day camps (no overnight stays) from late March through the end of April.
School District 51 would like to thank OWL’s many supporters and partners, including Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Friends of Youth and Nature, Gateway Fire Department, Christi Reece Group, Perri’s Powersports, Great Outdoors Colorado, Two Way Communication, and Gateway Canyons Resort!
