Grand Junction, CO - Central High School will become the first high school in Mesa County to house a School Based Health Clinic starting next spring thanks to $300,000 in funding from the Colorado Health Foundation and a partnership between District 51 and Marillac Health.

Construction of the new clinic began in mid-November. The clinic is tentatively scheduled to open in March 2020.

Services offered at the clinic will include:

  • Flu shots and immunizations
  • Throat cultures
  • Acute illness management
  • Mental health assessments and counseling
  • Crisis intervention
  • Reproductive health education
  • Chronic illness management
  • Sports physicals
  • Oral health screenings and education
  • Cavity risk assessment.

Students under the age of 18 need parental permission to seek medical care. The clinic will offer parents the option of signing a permission form before their child seeks care or contact parents if their child seeks care.

Most of the Health Foundation's grant - $190,487 - will be used for capital costs, such as exam tables and office furniture. The remaining $109,513 will be used for operating costs and to have five dedicated employees from Marillac Health. The clinic staff will include one full-time medical assistant; a behavioral health provider,  front desk/eligibility worker, and mid-level health care provider, each working almost full time (0.85 FTE); and a quarter-time dental hygienist.

The 1,046-square-foot clinic will be built in a spot currently occupied by a quarter of the cafeteria. Central Principal Lanc Sellden said the school will expand cafeteria seating into an unused part of the hallway to make up the difference and maintain current capacity in the cafeteria.

The clinic will be separate from the Central High School cafeteria, and the entrance will be in a little-used hallway next to the cafeteria that makes it hard for anyone passing by to see if someone is walking into the clinic or the cafeteria.
