Grand Junction, CO – On Friday, August 31, 2018, the Mesa County Valley School District 51 Board of Education voted 5-0 to accept and adopt a separation agreement with Superintendent Ken Haptonstall, effective immediately.

The action of the board was based upon the findings of the third-party investigation conducted by Jane Quimby. Ms. Quimby was hired by the board on August 7, 2018, to investigate the nature and cause or causes of the reported discrepancy between the actual cost of the Superintendent’s reorganization of the District’s administrative and support staff and the cost information previously provided to the Board of Education regarding such reorganization.

“The board thanks Dr. Haptonstall for his service to the district and wishes him well in his endeavors in the future,” said D51 School Board President Tom Parrish.

The board did not provide information about next steps, including who may serve as interim superintendent, nor did they discuss details of the separation agreement. Updates will be announced as they become available.

The Board also voted to release the report from the investigation to the public. The full report, along with Dr. Haptonstall’s response to the report can be found here.
