Dear D51 Staff & Families,

We are coming to the end of our second week of in-person learning, and I’m happy to report that it was another successful week with students and staff back in classrooms! We’ve been making adjustments as we go to make sure that our safety procedures are efficient and effective, and by working together, we continue to implement those protocols that are necessary for a safe learning environment. We appreciate your help at home with the symptom trackers!

Our D51 Online program began this week. As with any other experience involving technology, we’ve run into a few difficulties and issues to work out, and our staff has been working extremely hard behind the scenes to address those snags. With approximately 2500 students doing the online program, we want to make sure it is a successful and productive option for students, and are continuing to work toward that. In our preliminary surveys to parents this summer, it looked like we might have about half that many students in the program. We are happy to have our 2500 students, but Florida Virtual, our online program platform for K-5, is a bit overwhelmed with the volume of students they are serving across the country. They are considered as one of the better formats, which is why we chose them, so believe it will be worth the wait. We hope to have their online lessons available right after Labor Day. In the interim, our teachers are doing what they would have done anyway, with or without Florida Virtual: getting students familiar with the online learning platforms, getting to know their teachers, and conducting reading and math assessments that will help guide our lessons and help us prioritize what key skills each student has already mastered and what skills are still needed from last year to guide this year’s instruction.

I want to remind you that this is a new experience for not just District 51, but for districts across the country, and we know you have questions. I encourage you to check the D51 Online website first to see if you can find the answer to your question, and if not, send me an email.

Schools are continuing to receive their regular delivery of cleaning and disinfecting supplies, and our warehouse is staying stocked and ready. I want to specifically thank our staff in the warehouse, as well as our custodial staff and nursing staff for the significant role they are playing in keeping our schools healthy and clean. Thank you for all you’re doing!

I also want to thank you for all you’re doing to keep our community safe and healthy so we could start our year in-person. As I have visited schools over the last two weeks, it has been so wonderful to see students learning and doing amazing things. The energy, excitement and positivity is high! I’m so proud of our staff, students, and families for all their hard work in making this happen.

I hope you have a great weekend. As always, please reach out if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Diana
