11-13 Superintendent Update

11/13 Superintendent Update
Posted on 11/13/2020
Dear D51 Staff and Families,

I appreciate your continued patience during this crucial time of change and adaptation.

Each week, we will continue to provide an update on how many positive cases of COVID-19 were identified throughout the week. Since our last update, 129 cases have been identified in staff and students. These positive cases were identified in the following buildings:
Elementary: Chipeta, Clifton, Dos Rios, Dual Immersion Academy, Monument Ridge, New Emerson, Nisley, Orchard Avenue, Pomona, Rocky Mountain, Scenic, Shelledy, Taylor, Thunder Mountain, Wingate.
Middle: Bookcliff, East, Fruita 8/9, Fruita Middle, Grand Mesa, Mount Garfield, Orchard Mesa, Redlands, West.
High: Central, Fruita Monument, Grand Junction HS, Palisade HS.
Other: D51 Online, Finance Department, Gateway, Hawthorne building, Independence Academy, Technology Department.
*Just a reminder these do not include the several hundred students and staff members that have been quarantined across the District.

Remote Learning
As you know, all D51 high schools, Fruita 8/9, and seven of our eight middle schools will shift to remote learning next week. Fruita Middle School and D51 elementary schools will remain open, as fewer staff and students in their buildings have tested positive for COVID-19 or have to quarantine after coming in close contact with a person who is COVID-19 positive. However, each building is different and the situation could change at our schools remaining open for in-person learning. Decisions about remote learning will be made on a case-by-case basis if the remaining schools experience increases in isolation and quarantine cases.

Our hope is that students learning from home next week will take these two weeks to get or stay healthy, and our goal is to return to in-person learning following Thanksgiving Break. High schools would resume Nov. 30 if we can reach that goal, and middle and elementary schools would come back Dec. 1, as Nov. 30 is an in-service day for middle schools and a planning day for elementary schools. If that changes, a decision will be made and announced as soon as possible, but no later than Wednesday, Nov. 25.

Food Service
The D51 Nutrition Services Department will continue providing meals for all students. Please visit bit.ly/d51altmeals for details. Parents/guardians/students may use any of these options to get a school lunch, and breakfast for the next day.

Boundary Meetings Reminder
A series of Zoom meetings will begin next week to discuss potential boundary changes for five schools. The meetings will focus on a possible shift in the boundary between Fruita Monument and Grand Junction high schools to help ease crowding at FMHS, and possible changes to the boundaries of Appleton, Pomona, and Tope elementary schools due to anticipated growth within Appleton’s borders. Visit d51schools.org/news to find out when the meetings will take place.

Thank you and have a restful and safe weekend.

Sincerely,

Diana
